Iran releases British sailors
David Miliband says end to ordeal shows 'diplomacy can work' as yachtsmen freed after being held for a week
Iran has freed the five British sailors detained after apparently straying into Iranian waters, the Foreign Office has confirmed. In a statement, the FCO said Iran's ministry of foreign affairs had confirmed the men's release. They had been arrested by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard last Wednesday. The foreign secretary, David Miliband, welcomed the men's release this morning, saying it proved "diplomacy can work".
"I have had confirmation that they are now heading towards international waters on their way to Dubai. I welcome the fact that this has been dealt with in a professional and straightforward way by the Iranian authorities." ... The FCO said Iran would take the men to international waters. Miliband said Iranian authorities had given "every indication" that they wanted to deal with the matter in a "straightforward, consular" way.
