The Big Read
Milwaukee Repertory Theater is pleased to announce we have been awarded a grant to host The Big Read in Milwaukee. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. Milwaukee Repertory Theater is one of 76 not-for-profits to be awarded a grant to host a Big Read project between September 2011 and March 2012. The Big Read in Milwaukee will focus on Harper Lee’s American classic To Kill a Mockingbird.
In September we will be announcing a full line-up of events as part of The Big Read. From read-a-thons, book discussions, lectures, movie screenings and of course our production of To Kill a Mockingbird, there will be something for everyone.
This major, community-wide literacy project is funding in part by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation; The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest; and a grant from the City of Milwaukee Arts Board and the Wisconsin Arts Board. The Rep is continuing to seek additional grants and sponsors for this effort.
